It's also a work day, and I don't think it's good for mount electronics to be
exposed to that heat for that long.

I agree with Sam that the outside volunteers that are in the hot sun should
be highly compensated plus it is not a good time of the year for solar
viewing because of the heat. In addition July 6 is 2 days after July 4 and I
think a lot of people may be out of town on vacation because it is a short
working week.
I think the event should be postponed to cooler weather.

I agree with Sam...I am thinking it will be hot for me to do this, so I am
probably not going to sign up for this.

Terri, for those who will be in the heat and humidity outside in the sun on
asphalt for 3 hours on July 6th during the hot part of the day, they should
get at least $50 coupons from Bookmans. July 6th is a horrible time of year
for solar viewing in Phoenix. For those doing inside presentations, if they
get $25 coupons, fine, but they will not be burned up like those outside.
To do this job for free inside is even ok, but to be outside in the furnace
for 3 hours, there should be compensation. There is a risk to the person
and to the telescope equipment outside. Canopies do not do the trick since
the scopes and the astronomer have to be in the sun. Also, entering solar
minimum there is a chance there will be no sunspots or flares. Did Bookmans
request solar scopes? If so, they should at least provide compensation with
coupons. If they didn't request solar scopes, we should rethink having
outside scopes in risky conditions.

Subject: [pasmembers] New Event on PAS Website for July 6 - Solar Viewing
Good morning PAS Members,
Indoor or outdoor displays, demos, handouts
and outdoor Solar Viewing
from 12pm to 3pm at Bookmans
at 19th Ave and Northern on July 6.
Sign up to today to assist.
Let me know if you are inside and what
you are doing to help, or outside with a Solar telescope.
I'm working on the details of the event.
RSVP today if you can do this event, and after i get
the details we want to know (will be posted in private forums) you can
change your RSVP if you decide against
doing the event. I just need to know we have a minimum of 2 solar scopes
attending, and maybe some indoor help.
I would like Mike to attend as well, with a meteorite table indoors with
me, or we might do it outside at the front
of the store like we do the Sidewalk Astronomy events. I haven't decided
yet. But input would be great.

Terri, Event Manager
I'm still adding details to this event.
