A couple of checkpoints:
1.) Was the J:\ drive mounted BEFORE the database was brought online?
2.) Reading network shares by the Oracle instance requires the drives to be
mounted by the system and not by a user account. There's a couple of ways
around this. One is to use AutoEXNT.exe and run a script to mount the drives
as a SYSTEM SERVICE.
However, I thought in 11g there was a way to read UNC paths but not sure if
that works for archive log destinations.

same account can spool a file successfully. Does anyone know what I am

OSD-04018: Unable to access the specified directory or device.
O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.
