note 337413.1 does not seem to explain why I can read/write the share with the
same account with sqlplus but yet not set this parameter from the same session.
I know it is deprecated, but it should still work unless I can use another
and set it.

The source is writing to a local drive that is shared with everyone for the
moment. The dest is simply mapped to it as archdir(\\machine)(J:). I have
looked up the syntax.

11g on windows 2008. Oracle is running as an admin account. From sqlplus
same account can spool a file successfully. Does anyone know what I am
missing to set the parameter successfully?

alter system set standby_archive_dest='J:\'
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02097: parameter cannot be modified because specified value is invalid
ORA-16032: parameter STANDBY_ARCHIVE_DEST destination string cannot be
translated
ORA-09291: sksachk: invalid device specified for archive destination
OSD-04018: Unable to access the specified directory or device.
O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.
