That would be an excellent idea! Number like 1-900-HOT-DBA would probably
attract
many late night callers in need of tender conversation about backup and
recovery,
RMAN and SQL optimization. You could even discuss sordid little topics
like DBI, Streams and using OpenLDAP to implement net resolution.
That is a really sexy idea that cannot fail. Hey, you could even become
a DBA version of Rush Limbaugh or Howard Stern! Hey, you're posting
from the ".mil" domain! With a number like that, you'll be a real DBA puss
in boots!

Oracle DBAs. I currently have a crappy old Nokia phone that can recieve
email, but it's not very good for this purpose. Are any of you using
devices that work really well for DBA alerts? The Treo and Blackberry units
look nice, but they are expensive. Are they really worth the expense for
this function? I used to carry a clam-shell Motorolla pager that was
useful, but too big for comfort. A phone/pager combination would be ideal I
think, if it works well :-).
