I'll add in my 2c on Cary's "Mastering Trace Data" class.
I've taken the extended course, (Two years ago, was six, four hour sessions
with Cary online...) which is still my favorite class to date. You haven't
lived until you've learned how to "translate" a bare trace file into functional
analysis data on your own... :)
I've also taken the one day course while in Denmark this last year at MOW.
When it was offered again to me at Enkitec, I have to admit, I wanted to go to
see if there was anything new to learn, (there always is...) but figured I was
past my quota on registration for the class and figured it should be offered to
some of my fine coworkers first.
I recommend the course whenever I can and as Tim Gorman already mentioned, it
will be offered at RMOUG Feb. 11th for anyone who is thinking of coming to
RMOUG, why not take advantage of the extra course offering from Cary the day
before the RMOUG main event?
I use what Cary taught me every day- just used some of that knowledge within
the last hour for two different clients.

I have taken the Hotsos Optimizing Oracle SQL class and found it
worthwhile.
For a reference point I've worked with Oracle for 6 years, 2 as a full
time DBA. There was some review to the course, however many areas of
review clarified items that I thought I fully understood. As Rick said,
the class does cover tracing, but (IMO) at a high level and only done to
show where the data consumed by their "Harness" tool is coming from.
I'd agree the class isn't particularly tailored towards DBA's and is
suited to anyone writing SQL. That being said; plenty of time is spent
describing oracle internals and insuring you have a clear view of what
oracle is doing behind the scenes when you issue a query. If it's
assistance in writing efficient SQL you're after, the Hotsos class is a
fantastic starting point which I would recommend.
I've also read Cary's book and attended his Mastering Oracle Trace Data
class. If tracing is specifically what you're looking for I would look
no further than his class. It's most of a single day and gave me a
fantastic jumpstart on understanding how to interpret the trace data
and, more importantly, how to present that data to the business to
support your decisions.
In either class don't be afraid to ask questions, there's a lot of
years of experience hidden in the presenters head. In my experience I've
gained as much benefit from sidebar conversations as I've taken away
from the classes themselves.
