Hi,

We(I) configured ~20 ODBC connections using Oracle
Generic Heterogeneous Services (HS). I hated it
because we were dynamically adding-dropping
connections every couple weeks, which is a manual
configuration process on the server (updating config
files, processes, etc).

I found Generic HS had syntax incompatibilities that
hung cursors on DB_LINKS based on incompatible SQL
statements (which I had to protect using views). At
one point I figured out a couple tricks to flush the
DB_LINK connection and recover cursors, but I forgot
them now.

We ended up using an ETL tool instead to bridge
databases, and I think Oracle's gateway products might
also be something to check out. Maybe others had
better luck with a particular flavor of HS, but not
Generic.

That's my opinion. Good luck.

Regards,

Mike Thomas
