I would say clean only as needed. Use a big blower bulb like the Giottos (looks like a 1940s A-bomb, stands up by itself and does not roll off the table) to blow the occasion dust off, though.

It is best to try to minimize getting nose prints on the lens. I always pull back the retinal camera joystick, and then move the table up (our Reliance chair does not move) and have the patient put his chin in. On the Cirrus, I can't do this. I tell the patient to carefully put his chin on the left side of the chin rest. This is a difficult concept for some, and they seem to aim the nose for the lens before I can stop them.

I found ether to be expensive and volatile, the majority of it evaporated instead of being used. Cotton ball (not Q-tips) and alcohol work for me.

Thank you everyone for your GREAT responses. I suspect that kimwipes and
maybe some salt crystals were the culprit in our scratched lens. I really
appreciate all the tips and advice. Hopefully this won't ever happen again!

One more question to add: does anyone clean lenses preventatively (i.e.
daily) or should it be done only as needed?

Thanks again for all the great information!

It's probably too simple for the Scientific Session, but would be perfect
for the new Pearls, Tips, & Tactics course.****

Noelle,****

We recommend first using a blower to remove any dust/particles that may
damage the objective lens. ****

 ****

You can then use a lens cloth and denatured alcohol. Do NOT use isopropyl
alcohol or other harsh cleaning chemicals, which can remove the coating on
the outer surface of the objective lense. ****

   Hello OPTIMAL,****

I am wondering if anyone has a set protocol for cleaning fundus cameras.
Specifically, how often do you clean the front objective lens, and what
methods do you use? We recently discovered that one of our camera lenses
was badly scratched from someone cleaning with something abrasive
(seriously looks like it was done with sandpaper..thankfully it does not
affect the image at all in most cases)****

Any other tips on camera cleaning and maintenance would be welcome! ****

Thanks very much!****
