It has been claimed on the Hims Inc. e-mail list for their braille products
(like the Braille Sense U2) that people prefer Window-like commands and
structures on their braille products with its perkins keyboard because they are
simular to Windows-based computerkeyboard commands, and having to use what
one might call âbraille mnemonicsâ commands on a braille notetaker, while
also using a PC with its qwerty keyboard, is confusing to people, especially to
children. So, as a reverse example to illustrate: on the perkins keyboard of a
braille notetaker, to go to the beginning of a file is generally chord-123; to
go to the end of the file is chord-456. an intuitively sensible
braille-feeling solution; the left vs right sides of the braille keyboard. To
duplicate that on a qwerty keyboard, one might press space-L, or control-L or
something like that, and to go to the end of the file one would have to do
something like control-underline which is a shift on the hyphen. Not at all
intuitive nor âbraille mnemonicâ. So then, do people prefer to have the
Windows-like keyboard commands and other simularly inferred commands done on a
perkins keyboard, or do people prefer braille-feeling commands on their perkins
keyboards, and standard PC Windows commands work as they do on their qwerty
keyboards? Do people become confused between the two? Both can work
functionally, but what do people prefer? Do people become confused because
they have one set of commands using their PC and another set of commands using
their perkins keyboard on their braille device? What of children? Although I
do not believe nor take seriously the claims made by the hostess of the Hims
Inc. e-mail list, it would be very helpful and useful to hear from more than
just a few of us. It appears that the new BrailleNote Touch follows
well-established and successful braille keystrokes and structures, somewhat
contradictory to the assertions made on the other list.
Thanks for any valuable feedback. Anyways, if the after-hours projects comes
to fruition here in Ottawa, I plan to have a built-in feature to customize
keystrokes and a key re-mapper, just as Windows itself features.
