Is it true that Mark Schubin has not posted any Monday Memos for
weeks now?

Yes. It's true.

As I pointed out in the last memo to come out long ago, I've been swamped by my work at the Metropolitan Opera. We're in the midst of a series of global live HD cinemacasts, serving theaters in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia (so far) with feeds in different formats (including motion-compensating HD frame-rate conversion), with and without subtitles, at different data rates, and with different types of sounds. Simultaneously, the shows are being broadcast globally live on radio, sometimes with joint content with the cinemacasts, sometimes not, sometimes with different content for U.S. commercial stations, U.S. non-commercial stations, and international stations. They're also going out on satellite radio and being streamed. The intercom requirements, alone, are mind boggling. We're also recording on 50 different devices (from hard drives to HDCAM SR) in different formats and doing immediate dubbing to provide material for other cinema groups and for rapid editing turnaround for television broadcasting (which will have different picture and sound mixes from the cinemacasts and radio broadcasts).

Tomorrow's show, the third in three weeks (a brand new opera, "The First Emperor"), will begin with actress Zhang Ziyi as host at 1:30 pm EST and will run until about 5 pm. At 5:30 pm, we'll be doing a live satellite press conference for the TV-critics press tour, delaying our wrap. Wheee!

Normally around this time of year he would talk only

not "only" surely

about the coming HPA Tech Retreat. It's fully booked,

Yes. It sells out earlier each year. This year, it sold out by mid-December.

and it looks
like an interesting program again:
  http://www.hpaonline.com/mc/page.do?sitePageId=40946

If you scroll down in the program you'll see my name, just below
Dr. Naoya Katoh of Sony. We will talk about xvYCC transmissions
and wide color gamut receivers, how we expect to receive the full
glory of the Digital Cinema color gamut in our living rooms.

Charles Poynton will kick off the subject of wide color gamut in
his pre-Retreat Seminar on Tuesday PM. We (Katoh and I) suspect
that Charles will predict that broadcasters and producers hesitate
to open up the gamut, because then the final results will depend
on the actual display gamut and on properties of the signal
processing in the receiver. And they hate that. We (Katoh and I)
intend to demonstrate that this is only a minor nuisance, well
worth getting over it, and let's all enjoy a wider color gamut.

I could go on and on, but if you want to know more then you must
come to ***The Tech Retreat*** in Palm Springs. Oops, it's full!

There are still a few spaces left for the ATSC, Poynton, and future-of-the-home sessions, I think.

Thanks!

TTFN,
Mark
