As I recall, Thomson was a major player in the ATSC process. They supported the proponent system developed by Sarnoff Labs and are a member of the HDTV Grand Alliance.

The Grand Alliance consisted of AT&T, General Instrument Corporation, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Philips Consumer Electronics, David Sarnoff Research Center, Thomson Consumer Electronics, and Zenith Electronics Corporation.

Some of these companies have since been acquired.
