You have to remember a few facts: (facts are troublesome things...) Yes, NBC pays, but only for the US rights. Other networks around the world pay for the rights in their respective countries and/or regions. The vast majority of the world watches 50hz television. True, the majority of that is 625-line, not HD, but 50hz is what matches their broadcast format. As I have been led to understand, the Olympic contract specifies that the host country specifies the feeds that are fed to every broadcaster in the world. Think about it. You really can't have 30 or 40 or 50 different camera crews all covering an event such as figure skating. The majority of the crews would have compromised coverage. So the Olympics host committee arranges for the coverage. Fortunately they decided to shoot 1080i this time.=20 I believe the rate conversion hardware has gotten a lot better in the last couple of years.=20 Perhaps someone could argue that NBC should have paid extra and gotten 1080i/59.94 camera coverage. (Some could also argue that considering how much they paid they should get it already.) But that's not how the games work. -greg -----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Doug McDonald Sent: Tuesday, January 31, 2006 6:19 PM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: Olympics HDTV Greg Staten wrote: > Others can probably fill this in greater details, but it is my > understanding (from discussions with folks at both NBC and the CBC) that > the HD event feeds coming from Torino will be 1080i/50.=3D20 >=20 > The event feed format is at the discretion of the host country. Why do they do things like that ... especially for HDTV? Since the USA is the major site for HTDV, it should be 60 Hz. If necessary, there should be dual cameras. Feed type should be at the discretion of who pays: which is NBC.
