Their current Sky+ box can be looped through to a DVD-R using the RGB out=
on the box. And there are companies which provide digital out from the S=
ky+ box, at very significant cost and violation of the warranty. The stuf=
f thats copy protected at the moment is high value PPV movies and one-off=
events not conventional pay-TV. That could change with HD at studio insi=
stence. Note that this is an MPEG4 Thomson box, ptrobably very similar to=
the DirecTV MPEG4 HD also being procured by News. The interesting thing =
is whether it will use DVB-S2 as a combination of MPEG4/S2 is an 80% effi=
ciency gain over the current DVB-S/MPEG2 Sky system. One thing is certain=
with Sky: they *ALWAYS* follow the money..

DN

This is kinda smart... by including a hard disk, you give the =

customer the ability to time-shift and to repeat a transmission. =

But you don't give him the capability to record an infinite =

amount of programming, or to take it out of the settop box. =

By giving the customer 80% of what he needs, you don't need to =

bother with making an output for an external recording device, =

and thus you don't have to worry about content protection ! =

The file format on the hard disk is typically non-standard, and =

(supposedly) incomprehensible for PCs (that have DVD recorders). =

So this generous offer is in fact a smart method of copy protection. =

The DTV receiver with the built-in PVR is a natural combination... =
