Two interesting tidbits from Netflix in their quarterly earnings
report:
1. For the first time, they have more international subscribers
than U.S. subscribers.
2. Morgan Stanley, which raised its price target to $210, noted
that Netflix's original content has encouraged more pay-TV companies
to incorporate the streaming service into their plans.
This tends to confirm my position that the MVPDs have no incentive
to block Netflix, or to slow it down; they do have the incentive
to work with Netflix to integrate the service with their own pay-TV
bundles, as they have done for decades with HBO, ShowTime, and Starz.
I'm not sure what you're missing here, or why. The fact that the legacy MVPDs
want to "incorporate" Netflix in their own bloated bundles, if anything, is
PRECISELY why they would want to block Netflix from their mandated-neutral
Internet tier, when our FCC Chairman gives them the option to do so. Your logic
is backwards, Craig, as so often happens.
Here, let me make it plain for you. The legacy MVPD tells its customers, you
want that Netflix programming? No problem! The way to get it, the only way to
get it, is to subscribe to our expensive and bloated bundle, in which you have
the privilege of also receiving, say, the more expensive ESPN channels, some
niche channels that you don't want to receive, and any number of other material
that will increase our monthly profits.
