The HDMI connector is also far less reliable than a DVI connection. The connectors fall out of vertically oriented jacks and the weight of the cable and design of the jacks often causes broken connections at the circuit board or weakening of the jack itself. It is simply not a physically robust connector system.
I have had to repair dozens of HDMI jacks that were broken and done dozens of service calls for loose HDMI connections. I have never had a single failure of a DVI connection or connector.
Obviously, the size of the DVI connector is an inconvenience, but HDMI was not the best solution that might have been provided.

The HDMI connecter is more consumer friendly then DVI. It is smaller, does not need screws and "USB like". HDMI carry both Video and Audio and currently with HDMI1.4 they added Audio Return and Ethernet as well. Copy protection is a strong wish of content creators that is better done in digital domain then analog. Those are the basic reasons I think. And it is very expensive to re-compress with good quality. To manufacture without HDCP license will be risky for the manufacturer and will mean short lifespan for that brand Mike Tsinberg web: www.keydigital.com <http://www.keydigital.com/>---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can UNSUBSCRIBE from the OpenDTV list in two ways: - Using the UNSUBSCRIBE command in your user configuration settings at FreeLists.org - By sending a message to: opendtv-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can UNSUBSCRIBE from the OpenDTV list in two ways:- Using the UNSUBSCRIBE command in your user configuration settings at FreeLists.org- By sending a message to: opendtv-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
