Terry, No argument from me about properly processed SDI video! Our studio uses a Ross Synergy SDI production switcher, and our cameras are SDI encoded from the RGB out of the camera CCUs. No NTSC composite jaggies on chroma edges! The resulting video when displayed on an SDI input monitor is simply stunning. Unfortunately, we do not have an SDI master control switcher, nor an SDI STL to our transmitter, nor an SDI input to the NTSC exciter of our transmitter, so much of that stunning beauty gets lost. But then again, most of the video we air comes to us from PBS, which uses Digicipher II compression to deliver that content, and it is definitely much lower than full SDI resolution and beauty. For one thing, Digicipher II delivers MPEG 2 using 4:2:0 chroma, as does all ATSC formats, so right there you're killing a lot of chroma resolution compared to pristine 4:2:2 SDI video. To be fair, DVDs are also 4:2:0 chroma. I still believe that the majority of DVD's superior video quality comes from the non-real time compression procedure.
