TOKYO, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics conglomerates
Hitachi Ltd. (TOKYO:6501) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.
(TOKYO:6752) have agreed to jointly produce large liquid crystal
display panels for flat screen TVs, a newspaper said on Friday.
Business daily Nihon Keizai reported that Matsushita, the
maker of Panasonic brand products, will probably shoulder some of
the 100 billion yen ($894.3 million) investment for a new LCD
plant Hitachi is planning to build in Japan as early as 2006.
Electronics maker Toshiba Corp (TOKYO:6502) may also join the LCD
project, the paper said.
Officials at all three companies said nothing has been
decided on such a project and declined to comment further.
Analysts said it would make sense for the three to join hands
given the heavy investment burden required to produce LCD panels
with enough scale to compete with Sharp Corp <6753.T> and other
players in the increasingly competitive field.
