These were certainly three well-known search engines > that were available long before Google, and that have no more in > common with card catalogues than Google does. > > So this is what I don't get. The dynamic of hype. Well except for a few facts. Like the fact that Yahoo has been using Google for search technology, but just dropped them to use their own (previously-aquired Inktomi - which itself feeds AOL, Hotbot, and MSN search - with modifications and ideas gleamed from Altavista and others). This is a tangled web but I think I've got it right. Microsoft desperately wants to be up there with Google, and Yahoo just by its nature is in the same boat. All the rest have fallen overboard -- AltaVista and Webcrawler - they died in part due to the fact that they didn't spider the web frequently enough to refresh their search database. Others died because they got greedy, or couldn't decide if they wanted to be a portal or search site (Lycos). As for card catalogs vs. google -- I'm sorry, but you can't even begin to compare the two. Sure, car wheels can be made out of solid steel if we wanted to (its round, same difference, right?), but that would just be stupid.
