Sorry, Craig, but no one has ever called Hulu a VMVPD. It is one of the
original OTT sites.
The article explains that Time Warner already created HBO Now, and this looks
like its second effort at developing an online presence, to take back the cord
cutters that no longer have access to its legacy distribution pipes. That's why
these content owners have to go online, Craig. It is because the MVPD "the
bundle" is unraveling.
At first, I thought they were talking about Time Warner Cable, which would have
been an even more interesting development. I'm sure that will come. Sell
broadband, and then separately, sell an OTT service too. Or piggy-back onto
some existing site, e.g. by buying an OTT site instead of creating a new one.
Craig focuses on the word "bundle," even though any OTT site can be said to be
offering some sort of "bundle." Nothing unusual about that concept. How else
would anyone create an online presence?
