In order to get a copyright extension you should have to pay a fee and file a complete digital high resolution unencrypted copy of the material with the Library of Congress. This would guarantee the work was legally available to enter the public domain when the copyright expired, as originally intended.

We have the technology to do this now.

Patents were originally an idea to improve the public good. They were harder to get, expired quickly, and did not apply to abstract algorithms before some court case in the 1980's.

Copyrights also were easy to get and expired even quicker. Copyright law has been adulterated to a far greater extent than patents, and is far more critical in an age where everything that can be represented by bits is now being protected for 70 years.

We need to go back to 14 years, and a 14 year extension IF REQUESTED by the LIVING author of the copyrighted material. The only thing a corporation should be able to protect is its name and trademarks.
