You need a plug-in IR transmitter, and when that is plugged into the
dock connector, you can't charge the iPad.
I did not think about the clumsiness involved with having to use an
IR transmitter. At least when TVs start shipping with Ethernet or
WiFi it will be easier to communicate with them.
The stuff Apple is doing with iOS devices is dependent on having an
Apple TV connected to the TV.
There is much yet to be done...
