Oops. Craig, you originally said: "Once again confirmation that standard remotes are not the answer to

I replied to the standard remote - future comment. The standard remote is not going away.

We'll see. But thanks for the clarification!

I do not believe that a numeric remote or a keyboard and pointing device are going to survive long term in the living room environment.

Now you're talking about streaming video to an IP enabled device, essentially putting a slingbox inside the cable box. Nice feature, but still has nothing to do with the standard remote.

No Slingbox involved. The streams will come from Comcast servers, not your STB. There "could" be a feature in the future that would let you move content already downloaded to your DVR to a mobile device, as it is clear that Comcast does not intend to make all programming available on demand.

The important point here is that once you decide to get a tablet device, assuming that other tablets offer similar features to the iPAD, if you are a Comcast subscriber you will have access to tons of content. Put this together with a vastly better GUI for finding content, and it is easy to see that the tablet will become the "remote" of choice.

And all of this does not even touch on the fact that these tablets will do all kinds of useful things in the home environment (apps to control other appliances), allow searching while watching TV and will serve as game controllers for multiplayer games on the big screen.

Even Apple ships a simple remote for Apple TV, and I expect that the CE guys will continue to ship simple remotes with new TVs, at least until everyone has wireless handheld devices that can run apps. As for DVD players and other devices, they will be replaced by improved intelligence in the TV or a box connected to it like Apple TV, and by mobile hand held devices and streaming.

Craig
