Just a theory at this point, but...

The conglomerates have been training us to pay for their content for quite some time now. And we have learned to do this despite the fact that these programs are filled with commercials.

This gives them many options as they move into a world where they can create a direct relationship with their viewers:

- Pay to own the content;
- Pay for a limited viewing window (rental)
- Pay for a brand (some kind of payment for access to a library of a conglomerate)
- Pay for a service (like cable or sat radio today)
- Free - with targeted ads
- Free - as a reward for some other transaction

What the congloms do not want to do is create a service that diminishes the value of these options.

This is one reason that things seem to be moving away from the existing broadcast model, where it is difficult to track who is watching and most ads are NOT targeted.

One way to assure migration to a new model where direct payment is an option, is to treat each new service as if it is a new distribution channel that requires separate rights for the content.

In this context the sports leagues would probably go nuts if sporting events carried on DTV broadcasts were to ALSO be available free-to-air to MPH devices. The leagues will no doubt insist that this is a new channel and that there will be separate rights fees.

Regards
Craig
