Here you go, Craig. Explain how this phenomenon jives with your incessant mantra about how no one is watching the OTA networks.

Yup.

But growth/decline rates based on percentages can be misleading.

For example:

Overall U.S. beer industry sales were down roughly 1%, falling from 205.7 million barrels sold in 2009 to 203.6 million barrels sold in 2010, the Brewers Association said. Sales of imports, which had dropped 9.8% from 2008 to 2009, rose by 5% in 2010.

Craft brewers sold an estimated 9,951,956 barrels* of beer in 2010, up from 8,934,446 in 2009.

Growth of the craft brewing industry in 2010 was 11% by volume and 12% by dollars compared to growth in 2009 of 7.2% by volume and 10.3% by dollars.

* 1 barrel = 31 US gallons

So let's run some percentages...

Big Beer produced:

196,765,554 BBLs of beer in 2009

193,648,044 BBLs of beer in 2010

A 2.7% decline in sales; a 3 million BBL decline is volume.

Craft Beer produced:

8,934,446 BBLs of beer in 2009

9,951,956 BBLs of beer in 2010

An 11% increase in volume or just over 1 million BBL increase.

It's nice to be part of the GROWING part of the industry, but we are taking tiny bites of the overall market share.

Likewise, TV antenna sales appear to be booming if you look at the growth percentages. But these percentages are based on the growth of a TINY market.

Regards
Craig
