Wow, Ron, I'm impressed!

So okay, if the system is as clean as the ones you scoped, it looks like 30 dB 
SNR is feasible. But if stuff starts degrading, maybe not too safe to shoot for 
30 dB? Anyway, with a penalty of 3 dB compared with the Shannon limit, 30 dB 
SNR gives just under 50 Mb/s capacity, in the 5.5 MHz channel.

I would expect a FTTH system to be capable of supporting higher SNR safely, but 
maybe that isn't true. Optical connectors are fool proof either.
