- Follow-ups:

     - Tuner comments - TV Technology has a story on the comments submitted to
the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding the final date for the
"tuner mandate" and whether TVs smaller than 13-inch should be included:

     - July 1 -
          - This week I've listed 89 advertised TVs 36-inch or larger. Of
those, 36 (40%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. At this point, 100%
of those sets manufactured or imported into the U.S. are supposed to have
integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 44 sets between 25- and
35-inch. Of those, 2 (5%) had integrated DTT-reception capablity. At this
point, 50% of those sets manufactured or imported into the U.S. are supposed to
have integrated DTT-reception capability.
          - See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that
are HD and/or widescreen.

retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 -
          - Neither the FCC nor the NAB updated their lists this week.
          - According to Doug Lung's RF Report, as of July 31, the FCC's CDBS
database listed 742 licensed U.S. DTT stations:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=960>

- This week's FCC meeting has been moved to Friday:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-260401A1.pdf>
There are no H/DTV items on the agenda:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-260318A1.pdf>

- International H/DTV news:

     - Here's a Spain update.  One interesting item is a move by a pay-TV
programmer to free-to-view over-the-air service:
<http://www.advanced-television.com/2005/news_archive_2005/Aug1_Aug5.htm#spainover>

     - Vieta is selling a Freeview DTT receiver for use in moving vehicles:
<http://www.techdigest.tv/2005/07/watch_freeview_.html>

- According to iSuppli, the cost of 40- and 42-inch LCD panels fell to an
average of $1125 in July, with some dipping to $950, suggesting retail prices
perhaps as low as $2500 by the end of this year:
<http://www.eetuk.com/mr/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=166403618>

- Pacific Media Associates, meanwhile, reports street prices for 40- to 45-inch
flat-panel TVs dropped 14% from the first to second quarters of this year, with
42- to 43-inch plasmas dropping most (17%):
<http://www.pacificmediaassociates.com/Press_releases/press_release.htm#press38>

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets
for the first 27 weeks of 2005 were down 7.7% from the same period in 2004; my
ten-week running average was down 6.3%.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 27th week
were 43,637 units and for the first 27 weeks 1,996,831) compared to 10,212,840
for sets not called "digital" by CEA). The number of so-called "Digital
Televisions" sold for the 27th week was less than the number sold for the 27th
week last year. That negative-growth continues into figures I'm not permitted
to release yet.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) still accounted for about 16.4% of the TVs (not
counting plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 27th week
this year. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 84% of the
non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the 27th week this year were
still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. The last time CEA
released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TVs to be included, they raised
the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I suspect it is higher now.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the Sony PVR unit at Video
& Audio Center.

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
     I'm fairly certain that at least some of the Center City model numbers are
wrong. They also called ALL of their LCD TVs "HDTV."
