So fun!!!!!! I am going to do Musica Miercoles tomorrow!!!! I think I will
start with musical chairs, just to have them listen to the song a couple times
before I ask them to read it and sing along. I am going to do the Elvis Crespo
Song Besame because it is fun and upbeat and they don't know it yet.

My idea:

I. Musical chairs for fun, listen to the song and pick up what they know
II. In partners read through the song
III. Highlight words they don't know
IV. Invent actions for the words they know
V. In a circle act out the words they know while listening to the song.
VI. Everybody sings as loud as they can (without screaming) :-)

I had a class begging to play musical chairs. It turned out to be really fun
and semi-productive language wise. I had them walk around the circle to the
right/left, fast/slow, like different animals. We didn't end up talking about
the song lyrics much though. Although since it was Danza Kuduro I could have
had them put their hands up, etc. The person who was left without a seat had to
identify 2 colors on clothing or recite a song lyric.

I am starting my Spanish I class with the greetings and responses during this
week...There is a song that I like to use is called 'First semester of spanish
love song' and it is very funny, so kids really get a kick out of it. I show it
to them on youtube then we work on pronunciation of the lyrics, then we sing
the song:) If you haven't ever used this song, watch it on youtube and see if
this is something you could use----I use it every year, and all my classes love
it:) oh, and I don't translate the song...and after using the song for a week,
they all learn how to say hola, como te llamas, me llamo...etc.

Hi all - I was wondering how you incorporated songs/singing into the OWL
classroom. How do you introduce a song?

Before I switched to OWL, I would always do a cloze activity with a handout of
the lyrics where students would listen to the song and fill in the missing
lyrics, we would often translate the song and go over meaning, find cognates,
etc... then of course sing it.

Now that I am doing OWL, I don't feel like I want to do the cloze activity
anymore and definitely not translate. Your thoughts are much appreciated!
