At a very basic level, Survival is Coop with limited lives. Once you die X times, you sit out the rest of the map until it is won (advances to the next map) or everyone runs out of lives (map resets). In addition, an enhancement that I think would be worthwhile would be an option to allow all items and powerups to be picked up once per player per attempt at the map.
