How many years now do you think Alan? Their stronghold to the south isn't
to far south. We don't seem to get them further north in the county that
often anyhow.

I have seen them on CBC inside Bandon twice in past few years and I know
others have, too.

They occasionally show up in residential areas on the south coast. There
were four in a residence in North Bend last week. Yesterday a bird struck
a glass window at SWOCC- I heard it was revived and flew off. unfortunately
they did not read the band combo on the bird. Last winter I heard of 8 or
so that were on the beach in Bandon for several days. I do not think they
normally show up in winter in Bandon but I know they do for sure in the New
River bottomlands in Curry (private ranchlands) which is just like 10 miles
south of there.
I think that they can be found in Coos along the coast and in
neighborhoods once or twice a decade when the weather gets snowy and really
cold in the Coast Range and inland valleys. In Curry they nest on the outer
coast so can be found year round. Back about 10 to 15 years ago I was
finding them out on the North Spit of Coos Bay most winters but haven't
seen them in a decade or so.
Up Bethel Mtn. in SW Coos I saw 26 on Monday- but they are fairly regular
up there in the winter.
58 and blowing like mad when I got up this morning. Not much rain yet but
we usually have a bunch when it is this warm- I am sure it is coming!
Happy birding,

Hi,
Paul Reed had a Western Bluebird land in a tree in his front yard in
the 300 block of NE 11st Street in Newport this morning. Paul said
that was a first for there. I don't recall of any being found in a
Newport residential area before.
