We see Western Bluebirds in the Lincoln County coastal strip more winters than
not, but their timing is closely related to weather patterns. Basically. we
see them on the coast when the coast range has significant snow accumulation.
We think "our" bluebirds are downslope refugees from a few miles inland. I
have not seen any evidence of nesting in urban, suburban, or rural residential
areas on the coast, unlike their habits many places inland.

The five Bluebirds the North team saw on this year's
CBC were at a small athletic field below the reservoirs.
They had just come out of the residences across the
street. While I associate Bluebirds out of their ordinary
places with extensive snowfall, something else might
be going on. I've seen them inside the city limits of Corvallis
several times in Spring, Summer and fall. Apparently they
are nesting at Wilson Motors, one place I saw them.

As I understand it, until sometime after 1940 bluebirds nested in residential
Portland, When I was a kid birder there weren't bushtits in residential areas
of NE Portland. They are now about the most common bird in my neighborhood.
Bewick's Wrens have also become more common in urban residential Portland.
Scrub Jays and Lesser Goldfinches have similarly colonized my residential
area in my life time. With proper nesting opportunities Western Bluebirds
might become established in towns and cities. I was surprised by the nesting
bluebirds that I chanced upon in Gearhart last summer.
