Both Purple and Cassin's Finches have appreciable plumage variation, which can cause confusion. Cassin's Finches sometimes hold their crown feathers flush, and do not always appear to be "crested" (especially in individual snapshots). The field marks that tend to be more reliable are bill length/shape and, as Tom mentioned, primary projection. You're not going to see much variability there, especially among adults.
