There is no age limit at the John Scharff Migratory Bird Festival in Burns.
I just spoke with Chelsea Harrison, Executive Director of Harney County
Chamber of Commerce, and she was surprised that information like that was
out there. Children have always been welcome and will continue to be.
As to speculation that the festival will not happen this year, there is no
intention to let this situation stop the festival from occurring. Folks,
the tens of thousands of Ross's and Snow Geese are going to be there as
well as all the other spring migrants we come to expect. Harney County will
experience a degree of normalcy when the geese and cranes return as they
always have and the festival highlights this awesome spectacle as it has
done for so many years!

was not a passing fancy, we started taking family birding trips. These have
included long weekends to coincide with International Migratory Bird Day
and the birding events that go along with it. Two years ago, we went to the
event at Ladd Marsh and last year we went to the one in Leavenworth, WA.
This year, we were planning to go to the Harney County Migratory Bird
Festival (it doesn’t match up with IMBD, but that’s fine), but just
discovered that’s not an option. The current Malheur situation aside, the
vast majority of the events at that festival are only open to kids 10 and
up. Cooper will be 8 in March, and thus is eligible for so few of the
options there as to not be worth the trip.
Does anyone have recommendations for a weekend bird festival in April or
May where the majority of events/field trips are open to kids?
