Then, I guess your best bet is to take down any feeders and/or provide a lot of
cover for the songbirds to use for shelter from the hawk. The shelter has to be
pretty thick, I've seen what was either a Sharp-shinned or a Cooper's Hawk
hunting for sparrows among the spiny leaves of a dense Mounding Aloe and I
didn't think the hawk could possibly fit in there, but it went in and out
repeatedly using different routes.

The hawks keep the feeder birds sharp, and they are more like wildlife than
wild pets when they have to keep a lookout. I love our Cooper's hawk, although,
I did come home to a bird feeder dripping blood once.

Agreed! That is the highlight of my feeder watching ... when a
Sharpie zooms by.
I rarely see a catch, but occasionally some feathers.

Personally, I'd rather see a Sharp-shinned, than another hundred

Unless your yard is harboring a species of some kind of special
concern and the hawk is an immanent threat to it, I suggest that you do nothing
special to discourage the hawk and certainly not harm it.
