The Prineville Christmas Bird Count was held on Monday, December 31 under
sunny skies. Twenty-four participants tallied 98 species and 13,867
individuals. The total species recorded was one short of the all-time
record. The best finds of the day were Black Phoebe and Barn Swallow, each
was new for the count. Others found on five or fewer previous counts were
Ring-billed Gull and Swamp Sparrow. Count Week birds not found on count day
were Wild Turkey, Peregrine Falcon and Bushtit. Biggest misses were Pine
Siskin (my first of the winter showed up in Bend on New Year's Day), Pinyon
Jay, Pacific Wren and Evening Grosbeak.
