I birded around Newport for a few hours today with Oscar Harper. At Yaquina Head we missed the Burrowing Owl, but compensation included a vast array of murres off Yaquina Head. My rough estimate was 25,000-28,000 birds but that could be off by a bit. Could be higher; I don't think lower. Also a subadult Bald Eagle, lots of guillemots, a few oystercatchers and five Harlequins on the south side of the point. South Jetty had a very close and reasonably cooperative LONG-tailed Duck about 1/3 of the way along the south jetty. Also about thirty Brant, a nice variety of grebes and a fully-molted Common Loon looking very elegant. Very few gulls. Marine Science Center area had a few Savannah Sparrows, more brant and small numbers of the usual waterbirds, plus a wad of Tree Swallows at the next boxes and a flyover vulture. By the time we started up the river the wind was a factor and we did not see a lot, though a flock of roosting gulls that appeared to be mostly Mew was about halfway to Toledo. Oscar can add anything I forgot. . . Alan Contreras acontrer56@xxxxxxxxx Eugene, Oregon
