I'm very sad to hear this news.
I had the privilege to bird with Lois on the Port Orford CBC, quite a
few years back. I think Jeff Harding was also with us at least for part
of the day before we split up to cover more territory.
It was as much fun as I've ever had birding. Lois was a wonderful person
with good knowledge of birds, good knowledge of the territory, and a
real joie de vivre.
This was just a few days after Lois had an Ancient Murrelet turn up on
her front lawn and kept it in her bathtub until rehabbers could take
over. How many Oregon birders can count Ancient Murrelet on their
bathtub list? Or even their lawn list? But she was just a lot of fun to
be around, whether we were pulling Wrentits out of the chaparral or a
Hutton's Vireo out of the shore pines above town, up by the water tank.
I haven't seen Lois since then, but every now and then she'd send one of
her stunning photos over the wire -- or sometimes a funny "hoax" photo
where a gull just happened to lined up with an oystercatcher in the
background, to create the illusion of a "long-billed gull."
I can't quite remember the name of her daughter's boyfriend who did
offshore seabird research, or of her daughter. But my heart goes out to
both of them, wherever they might be now.
Thank you Alan for sharing the news, even though it's sad. I appreciate
the chance to remember Lois. What a kick she was.
