Hello All, Laura and I took our canoe out this afternoon to look for tern nests. ( more on that later ) We put in at the Coyote Creek canoe launch on Hwy 126 ( not a nice place ) Heading north along the creek channel, not five minutes into our paddle around 3:00PM, we heard the distinctive Che-beking of a Least Flycatcher. We pulled into the submerged vegetation along the creek bank and slogged through the woods and hordes of Mosquitos to try and get a look. After 15 minutes, we got a brief glimpse, but the bugs drove us out. As we passed the spot on our way back out around 5:00PM, the bird was still emphatically calling. This time we stayed in the canoe and pished. The bird flew into view, perched for several minutes and called away! Looking at google maps, it looks possible to reach this area from the Hwy 126 Fisher Butte parking area and walking west along the south dike, across the channel and continue to parallel the Hwy to the woods along Coyote Creek. It's wet and buggy in there, so be prepared for that.
