We just witnessed quite the Anna’s Hummingbird drama! One of our feeders
male came and commenced mating. It wasn’t the quick event that I have seen
in the past in the Avian world, but rather a very prolonged aggressive act
where the male repeatedly pecked at her head and moved around on her back.
This went on for a good 5 minutes and then he suddenly picked her up with
his feet and dropped her on the porch floor where she took several minutes
to recover before finally flying off. I wasn’t sure she was going to
survive that treatment and especially in these temperatures, but I think
she will be OK.
