We just witnessed quite the Anna’s Hummingbird drama! One of our feeders is
protected under a porch roof and while a female was feeding there, a male came
and commenced mating. It wasn’t the quick event that I have seen in the past in
the Avian world, but rather a very prolonged aggressive act where the male
repeatedly pecked at her head and moved around on her back. This went on for a
good 5 minutes and then he suddenly picked her up with his feet and dropped her
on the porch floor where she took several minutes to recover before finally
flying off. I wasn’t sure she was going to survive that treatment and
especially in these temperatures, but I think she will be OK.
