We spent the weekend camping in north-central Oregon, birding parts of Sherman, Gilliam, Wheeler, and Grant counties. We didn't see anything earth-shattering, but there are so few reports (OBOL and eBird) from much of this area that we thought we'd mention a few of the more interesting birds: Gilliam County Carter Hill Road -- a Grasshopper Sparrow, 1.2 miles east of Hwy 19/Mayville Trail Fork Road -- 4 White-throated Swifts about a mile east of Hwy 19 Wheeler County Shelton Wayside County Park -- 2 Flammulated Owls hooting at night Hoover Creek Road -- a Mountain Quail, 2.4 miles east of Hwy 19 and a Clark's Nutcracker near Black Butte Lane Bull Prairie Road/FR 3029 -- a White-Headed Woodpecker on the road to Bull Prairie Lake CG, east of Hwy 207 and bordering the northwestern corner of Grant Co. Grant County Monument - Ate lunch in the park overlooking the John Day River, watching an Osprey on a nest, Common Nighthawks, Orioles, a Chat, Bank and other Swallows, and many other species of birds. Nice town. It's a great time of year to camp and bird in north-central Oregon. We had 108 bird species and no mosquitoes! Over the years, the ECAS Birding Oregon website has been an invaluable resource for exploring Oregon. Thanks to all who have provided information! www.birdingoregon.info Bill Bradford & Lora Minty
