Yesterday I watched several Steller’s Jays doing exactly the same thing (in
Canby, Clackamas County). Seems pretty sure there are insects to be found
in/under the moss.

Crows are a funny bird.
Yesterday, February 5, 2016, out in the maples trees in our backyard there
were a lot of crows.
They were out on the limbs doing what looked like taking the moss off the
limbs. It was dropping in large chunks. They would peck a little more
and then move
to another place on the tree. A few flew off but others stayed in the trees
there keeping
busy with their work.
They were there about 10 minutes before they all flew off.
It was a fun thing to watch. What was going on?
