I’ll cheerfully bow to more learned observers, but I’m guessing there was
something tasty (to the crows!) under the moss. The “pecking a little more”
before moving on seems indicative. Sap should be rising in maples now and that
might be why goodies are under the moss or even why the moss is there to begin
with, although that seems less likely.
Total curiosity, are we talking Dallas, OR or Dallas TX?

Received this from sister in Dallas. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or
have any comments as to it?

Crows are a funny bird.
Yesterday, February 5, 2016, out in the maples trees in our backyard there
were a lot of crows.
They were out on the limbs doing what looked like taking the moss off the
limbs. It was dropping in large chunks. They would peck a little more
and then move
to another place on the tree. A few flew off but others stayed in the trees
there keeping
busy with their work.
They were there about 10 minutes before they all flew off.
It was a fun thing to watch. What was going on?
