The 2013 Florence Christmas Bird Count was held on Saturday, Dec 14, 2013 on a mostly sunny and comfortable day with temperatures in the 40’s. About 40 people took part in the count, not including home feeder counters.

Overall numbers for the count were average, with 127 species observed and almost 15,000 individual birds, both very close to the averages of 30 years of this count.

Red-shouldered Hawk, Palm Warbler, and Northern Fulmar were recorded for only the sixth time. Misses include Tundra Swan, Purple Finch, and Surfbird.

Ninety Eurasian Collared Doves were counted; last year there were 103. Maybe the population has stabilized.

Higher than average counts were turned in for American Coot (6 times average), Pelagic Cormorants (5 times average), Common Murre and Red-throated Loon (3 times average).

Notable low counts were among the finches – 2 Pine Siskin, 12 Red Crossbill, and 10 American Goldfinch. Both White-winged and Surf Scoter were about 10% of average numbers.

Thanks to all who participated.
