We ran the 37th Florence CBC yesterday with 37 field participants. We had
mixed weather: 20 mph winds on the outer coast with no rain; inland was
calmer but with drizzle. Preliminary result (no feeder counters yet) is
120 species, just below our average of 123.
We had 4 sea watching teams, but almost no bird movement on the ocean and
wobbly optics. We did have sightings of Ancient Murrelet, Marbled
Murrelet, Black-legged Kittiwake, Long-tailed Duck, Red Phalarope, and a
couple dark shearwaters. We added two new count birds: Wild Turkey and
Common Yellowthroat. We had our first Bittern since 2013. Every single
team found a species that no other team found.
We had high counts of Black Phoebe (21), Lincoln Sparrow (27), Mallard
(854), Snowy Plover (31), and Orange-crowned Warbler (3). E Collared Doves
have dropped down from a high of 129 in 2019 to just 16 reported this year.
Misses: Killdeer, Red-shouldered Hawk, Ruddy Duck, Purple Finch, Am.
Goldfinch, White-throated Sparrow (hoping that feeder counters may have
gotten a couple of these). Shrike, Kite, and Rough-legged Hawk are not in
the circle this year.
Count week: Killdeer, Osprey
Thanks to all who made it happen!
