I birded Delta Ponds for a little under two hours this morning. Nothing
earth-shattering present, but the birding was good in general. My best
finds were three SCAUP (I'm guessing Lesser) and a flock of 10 or so PURPLE
FINCHES that were feeding on seeds in a maple-looking tree on the other
side of Goodpasture Island Rd.
In general, there were larger-than-usual numbers of GW TEAL, PB GREBE, GB
HERON, YR WARBLER, and ANNA'S HUMMER. There was also a decent-sized flock
of GC SPARROWS off of the trail along Goodpasture. Unfortunately, Lincoln's
Sparrow and Black Phoebe did not appear to be present. The former species
used to hang out in the blackberry thickets along Delta Hwy. (which were
cut back a year or two ago) and the local population of the latter appeared
to take a hit during the December, 2013 freeze. This was also the first
time I've failed to record a Wood Duck at Delta Ponds.
