I don't read every post and I guess I missed where LG is coming from on this.
Since gas and other supplies can be far apart and sometimes limited out there
in that country, I try to give business to those little places when I am in the
area. On the selfish side, I want them to be there when I need them. So if I am
in the vicinity of The Narrows, Crane, Fields, or Adel, I try to spend some
money for gas and food. Some of you will remember that there used to be gas at
Frenchglen. These places operate on a tight margin and they can disappear. This
is for the good of our birding trips and for local people. Sorry, I don't know
what the BOO list is.

Date: Sun, 14 Feb 2016 14:30:29 -0800
Nothing like spending Valentines Day out looking at gulls on a rainy Sunday,
something we both love to do :-)
There were three GLAUCOUS (1st cycle) and five WESTERN GULLS along with about
800 pink-legged gulls along Delashmutt Lane. We went looking for the apparent
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL that Bill Tice found on February 4th. Bill was there
again this morning and hadn't seen the latter gull either. The link below has a
link to the location.

Subject: [obol] That Dark Gull
Date: Sun, 14 Feb 2016 15:07:55 -0800
Hi All,
A week ago Friday I posted about seeing a dark gull, which Paul Sullivan and I
eventually concluded was a dark California Gull, and I included one pic. A few
of you responded with doubts that this is what it was, being way too dark, and
I have to admit my conscience has bothered me. My first thoughts was it must
be a Lesser Black Backed Gull.
Since then I asked Dave Irons to look over 5 pics of it, and along with my
comments, he and Shawneen feel confident it is a Lesser BB Gull.
The main points of ID were:
1) The dark color.
2) The size is right, when compared to the pink legged gulls with which it was
photoed
3) Yellow legs
4) The right shape
We could never see that the iris was light in color, but at over 100 yards, I
am not sure this is possible, especially at 200 yards. Also, I think the
reason why Paul and I were swayed to California Gull was the bill. While we
could see the red gony, we could also see that the end, or near the end of the
upper bill was a dark area as well. But that part has haunted me because we
did discuss the likely hood of it being mud since it had been probing for
worms. It did have some darkish streaking on the neck, less so about the head,
with a smudge in the eye area.
Otherwise, I did see it fly once and the contrast between the black primaries
and the rest of the upper wing was not great, certainly not as contrasty as the
typical Californian. Also, I only saw one small white spot near/at the end of
the first primary.
With all that said, I have one question - If it was not a Lesser Black Backed
Gull, what was it?
I felt with the rain last night, the gulls might as least be in the same area
today, and they were. However, the suspect in question was not there. After
scoping the gulls for 20 minutes, who should come by but Dave and Shawneen.
After talking to them a little more, I will be sending in a report to the ORBC.
Also, in hindsight, I wish I had been a little more doubtful of calling it a
Cal Gull, as this may have prevented some from checking on it themselves. It
might still be around. The weatherman is calling for rain for this week, so
this is likely to keep the gulls in the area. I will try to add another pic
here since this is permissible now.
If Paul wants to give his thoughts, he knows he is welcome to.

Subject: [obol] Herring spawn event?
Hi -
It appears that a herring spawn event may be beginning at the South Jetty of
Yaquina Bay. The past 2 years these events have been incredible spectacles
involving over 1000 birds.
The sequence was as follows:
1. Adult Pacific Herring are present in the bay but mostly are staying in deep
water (dredged channel. etc.)
2. Herring move into shallows, attract attention of pinnipeds, fish-eating
birds.
3. Herring spawn in shallows, (one-two days), dropping eggs on seaweed,
eelgrass, jetty rocks. Heavy predation by birds, Sea Lions.
4. Adult herring depart, eggs attract large numbers of sea ducks, who feed for
10-15 days: Scoters, Buffleheads, Long-tailed Ducks, goldeneyes, scaup. Gulls
scavenge clumps of eggs brought to surface by ducks, and get some eggs off
rocks at low tide.
Anyway, I have been seeing bird activity indicative of herring in deeper water
for several days. Yesterday and today a group of up to 120 sea ducks has been
near the rocks along the road near the red gate. Today Sea Lions were very
active on the flats west of the first finger (groin), and I think were chasing
herring. So I think spawning may happen tonight or tomorrow. So far, it appears
fewer fish may be present than last year.
This is also happening about 1 week earlier than last year.
Last year two additional spawning events happened further up the bay at
intervals of 10 - 14 days, but were not as convenient to observe.

In my opinion, anyone who deals with the public as a professional or business
owner should tone down public expression of political viewpoints, especially in
their workplace. It's just common courtesy. If you serve people you want them
to feel comfortable with you. If you don't do that, in a capitalist country,
you should expect a certain proportion of people to take their money elsewhere.
I don't plan to boycott this business but will limit my purchases to an
occasional tank of gas and my Honda Civic doesn't hold much.

The next Eugene Birders Night (SWOC) meeting will be held Monday February 15,
2016 at 7 pm at the McNail-Riley house, 601 W 13th Ave, Eugene. The
McNail-Riley House is the restored historic house at the NW corner of W.
13th Ave. and Jefferson St. The parking area, located immediately west of the
McNail-Riley House, can be accessed from Jefferson St. via the driveway located
immediately north of the M-R House, or from W. 13th Ave. and a driveway west of
the M-R House.
After initial introductions, we’ll share recent sightings and discuss birding
connected topics. Rick Ahrens will then present a program on “South Texas -
Butterflies (lots), Birds (a few), and Beyond (??) at the Borderâ€
If you've run out of "lifer" bird possibilities on your North American list,
why not switch to butterflies? In the lower three counties of Texas more than
300 butterfly species have been recorded, 150 of which go no farther north.
Local naturalist Rick Ahrens has attended the Texas Butterfly Festival the past
two years and will talk about the recently created National Butterfly Center in
Mission, Texas, as well as other nearby flora and fauna.
No entrance fees! All are welcome!
