Tom Philiben joined me today on the East Cascades Audubon Bend - Alfalfa Raptor
Survey. We spent almost 7 hours driving 73 miles under partly cloudy skies,
light winds and warm temperatures, 39 - 53 degrees F. Our 10 mph average meant
we spent a lot of time watching the raptors. One of our first stops was to
watch a male Am. Kestrel perform his display flights. It was like he was
riding a roller coaster going up and down close to the tree where Mrs Kestrel
was sitting. we were not the only ones watching the show because all of a
sudden a Prairie Falcon showed up on a nearby treetop. The Kestrels then
switched priorities and they both started dive bombing the Prairie Falcon.
This went on for for quite a while until the PRFA decided there might be better
places to spend the day. During the day we also saw Red-tail mating flights
and also saw a pair mating in a tree top. We ended up with 117 Raptor as shown
below.
Raptors counted;
Red-tailed Hawk------------------- 86
American Kestrel------------------ 19
Northern Harrier------------------ 1
Bald Eagle------------------------- 2A, 1S
Rough-legged Hawk------------------ 6
Prairie Falcon-------------------- 1
Cooper's Hawk-------------------- 1
Total-----------------------------117
