I agree Paul – I made the same suggestion with a slight variation that we
really need to be Visual at Community Events around town. But it can't be just
one or two people we need to be a crowd. So my suggestion is that every member
commits to attending at Least 2 events throughout the year. Strength in numbers
– Most new business owners do not necessarily have a BIG network of other
business people – so most attend events around town (charity events, chamber
events, etc) to meet other like mined business owners – that’s where we come in
if they see groups of people that belong to the same group –most times they
want to be a part of that group especially when we have what we have to offer!!!

Friends,
I’m going to take the opportunity to flesh out the “Need recruiting for
members” item.
This was raised at our table and I would like to share with everyone my vision
of what might be effective for building our membership.
My vision comes from my experience of the first year and a half of building
this organization from 4-5 folks sitting around a booth at the local IHOP to
the bustling group of 11 members we reached at about the time we broke away
from BNI.
Our Situation at the time:
1. A sales force of 4-5 busy business people;
2. A shitty product to sell:
a. $500/year membership fee that covers NOTHING, i.e. no Christmas party,
no PLACE TO MEET (you have to buy breakfast to be able to sit in an IHOP
booth!), no SOCIAL EVENTS, no NOTHING (except referral slips);
b. A referral group that had a SOLE purpose of referring business to each
other with ONLY 4-5 salespeople.
How the HELL did we bring ANYONE in, let alone get to 11 people!?!?! Well, we
went through the yellow pages. We identified business categories that might
best benefit from being in our group, identified businesses within those
categories and cold called / cold-dropped-by them.
I think the same approach will work today, though look at our current situation:
1. A sales force of 30+ people. Yes, we’re still busy, but there’s a
whole lot more of us and varying degrees of “busy”;
2. An AMAZING product to sell:
a. $400/year membership fee that covers a place to meet, Christmas party,
summer party, social events, etc.;
b. A group that has been building a “brand” for excellence in our
community, and ALSO refers business….the referral sales force being 30+
It takes work. It takes identifying key business types and going after them.
It just kills me that, for example, we don’t have a jewellery store….travel
agent….
We have an amazing product to sell. It will take a district manager type to
make a plan for targeting and cold calling / cold-dropping-by. It needs to be
more than “ok, team, let’s think about jewellery stores this coming week and go
out and drop by, etc.”….it needs to be “We’re going to hit Sven Sandberg’s this
week. Anyone ever been in there? Anyone know the owners? Who lives/works
close by there? Ok, Bo – you’re going to stop in on Friday morning and hand
them a card. Gary, you’re going to stop by Monday, let them know that Bo
suggested you drop buy, and encourage them to come to Wednesday’s meeting. Bo
– call them Tuesday late afternoon to remind them”.
