[noCensorship] Re: Localproxy related questions

I have a java applet that basically simulates an HTTP request, but it does =
not do it in a "proxy-aware" fashion. It establishes a socket to xxx.xxx.co=
m:80 directly (when it should open the socket to the proxy server and tell =
the proxy server that it wants xxx.xxx.com:80). This applet is faling to =
connect to our server from Argentina, who's isps require the use of a =
non-transparent proxy. I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to how I =
can get this to work....

To me, that translates into 'some want to increase their knowledge, but =
most don't have enough to start increasing it'. Hmmm...

Dunno about that.=20
I made lots of requests for info from KSA.
What is really needed are the IP subnets used by each ISP there, and any =
new ports that are blocked. From that information, people (and localProxy) =
can produce lists of usable proxies for KSA users.

My interest in localProxy has increased lately (look at the CVS version of =
the back end to see the new ideas), so I'll be around more.

Heh, the CVS version? Or do you mean the latest released version (years =
old, i think).=20
IIRC, I had very little feedback from that last release, so now proxyTools =
has gone ahead without releases. CVS is up to date though.

It's the proxies that die. The UAE censorship hasn't changed much.
I've used the same database for many months though without needing to get =
new proxies into it.
It might seem to die sooner for others, coz I use a build with *all* the =
proxies in it. That takes longer to build, but I do it to ensure I =
eventually test all the proxies in the database. You could try this too, =
by just changing the globals.xml at this line:
  <item key=3D"maxNrHostsPerLayer">10</item>
Make it 1000 to ensure you get them all.=20
It takes LP a lot longer to learn much about each of the many proxies it =
has available at runtime then too, but if there's even one proxy that =
works well, it should start to use it quickly.

That default only determines what is highlighted in the configuration list =
when the GUI loads. Click on the one you really need.
It thinks Syria is a likely default for you because they have rfc1918 =
subnets 10.0.5/24 and 192.168.2/24 and your address must lie in one of =
those.=20
I did it (in firewalls.xml) to make it simple for users there a long time =
ago.=20
I'll remove it.

Heh, I set that to 2 weeks when I was updating hosts.zip more often than I =
do now. Sorry about that. I still update more often, but it doesn't get =
sent to SourceForge so frequently.=20
I'll see if I can still live with 2 weeks.
There were a couple of other issues too.=20
After a Windows service pack upgrade, my code was sometimes getting an =
empty file. I think that's fixed now, but I had only one system it =
happened on to test.
There was a rumor that the UAE blocked the URL the file was coming from. =
That turned out to be false (so far). Last time I checked, they were =
blocking the project main pages, but not the CVS areas.

That leads me to your question about the 'proper' way to get this file.=20
Any way will do. You can even get it using your web browser, if you like. =
The URL used is:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/proxytools/proxyTools/host=
s.zip?rev=3DHEAD
Other CVS files can be obtained the same way (though there were complicatio=
ns there too, with the .pl files, IIRC).

not=20
> inside firewall UAE-ADSL

Next time you see that, tell me what your address was. It probably means =
there are new subnets in use in the UAE that I don't recognize. It does =
have some ramifications, but nothing that should degrade LP's performance =
much.

> And after sorting hosts I'm always getting: DNS name resolution =
failed

The back end log will tell you what DNS it tried to use (bump debug up a =
bit, if necessary, to see it). You may have the old UAE defaults hidden =
away in your registry (if it's a Windows system). LP finds them and tries =
to use them - they no longer work.
I would need to see the section of the log (at debug =3D 3) that shows =
this to see exactly what's happening.
