Kieran watched as the ship on the screen rocked under the impact of the torpedo, his face narrowing slightly at the overly-large explosion. "What the hell...?" he muttered quietly, to himself, wondering what was happening. The Vanguard was, by no means, a warship, but it was not so weak as to be batted around in that fashion. Thankfully, despite all that had happened in the intervening time, Kieran was still a scientist at heart, and he quickly ran through the possibilities and probabilities of what could be causing the disruption. It was obviously the neutrino storm amplifying the problem, but what was there to do about it? "Captain." he said, quietly, stepping up behind the command chair. "We have to stop this. The Vanguard is some sort of key in all this, and destroying it may not be the answer - with your permission, I'd like to try and get a communication through to the Ark Royal." "Go ahead." Soman indicated the console, and watched as Kieran went to work, not entirely surprised as Ana drifted slowly over behind him. "Why come and watch?" Kieran asked, quietly, as he called up the interference pattern, analysing it for weaknesses. "I assumed you'd be able to pick out the information from down below." "Force of habit. I thought you were the one that was fond of routines." she shrugged, crossing her arms beneath across herself, feeling defensive as she always did about him. "I still think like me, you know." He pulled up a modulation profile from the transmitter record, beginning to carefully modulate it as he watched the algorithms of the interference pattern gradually come into focus on the analysis. "I know. I see they pickled the acid tongue along with the rest of you." She blanched slightly, stiffening. "Why can't you accept this, Kieran?" she hissed, turning a few nearby heads. Kieran didn't care, and kept his eyes on the work as his fingers wandered across the console. "I've accepted. I always accepted it. I was ready to resign to care for you, but you wouldn't have it." "You were in denial then, and you still are now." her voice softened as he reached out and changed an amplitude variation for him. He nodded his acceptance of the change, and continued. "Really? I was in denial? Then why is it that you're still looking exactly the same now as you did then? Same haircut, same make-up, same stud ear-rings? You used to change your ear-rings daily, it was something new to look for. You've been wearing those for seven years now." "Well... well... you just couldn't accept that there was nothing you could have done." she told him, bluntly, leaning in. "You made a good call, and rescued the entire team - including me. What else do you think you could have done? What good would resigning to wipe drool from my chin have done?" Kieran didn't answer as he set off the communicator, and spoke quietly. "This is Captain Kieran Darkwater of the Temporal Investigations Department to Ark Royal. You are ordered to stand down, under the authority of the TID. If you do not stand down, you will be stopped. Do you understand?" He waited a moment, for a response, a moment that grew into long seconds. "Did it get through?" Ana asked, finally. "We'll see." --------------------------------- With Yahoo!
