I can see one possibility: your audio output system does not support
48kHz. What are you using? JACK? ALSA? Is PulseAudio perhaps running?
This might block access to ALSA completely.

To check if your selected audio output sytstem can't handle 48kHz, you
can change the frequency setting in ~/.namarc back to 44100 and convert
the samplerate of your jam. You can use any of the below, whatever you
have or seems most comfortable for the time being. Once Joel has seen to
it, Nama WILL do it all for you:
sox -r48k jam.wav -r 44100 jam_out.wav
or
zresample --rate 44100 jam.wav jam_out.wav
or
zita-resample --rate 44100 jam.wav jam_out.wav
or
sndfile-resample -to 44100 jam.wav jam_out.wav
or
ecasound -f:16,2,44100 -i resample-hq,48000,jam.wav -f:16,2,44100 -o jam_out.wav

After the resampling copy jam_out.wav to jam.wav or jam_1.wav inside the
project directory, as in Joel's earlier mail.

If you don't know how to figure out which sound output system is active,
we might see about that later. It can be helpful for future guidance and
finding a way to set up the best possible audio configuration for your
purposes.
